Preventing weight gain is a continuous battle for many people.

As we begin to age, our activity levels can decline, and we may still keep our eating habits the same as those when we were a lot younger. This doesn’t sit very well in the energy expenditure equation, leading to rapid weight gain and perhaps the susceptibility to other diseases due to obesity.

The key to prevention is that you need to be conscious of all the choices you make concerning activity levels and your nutritional options. Throughout our lives, we have the choice to make ourselves a picture of health or not. The key is to become honest with yourself about the choice that you make. It’s never too late to make a change, but it helps if you set the changes necessary in motion. It’s not something you do for a month, but a lifetime commitment to good health and long and healthy life.

Below I’ll highlight some basic things you can do to prevent weight gain throughout your lifetime.

Five easy steps to diminish weight gain as you age.

  1. Be conscious of your nutrition. You don’t have to be obsessed, but try to understand as much as you can about your macro ranges. Make wholesome, healthy and natural food your primary source of nutritional value every day, limiting sugars and refined foods. If something comes out of the ground from dirt, you can guarantee your body can process that, and it will be used as a source of nutrients.
  2. Limit time sitting down and stay on the move. Our activity levels may decline as we get older, and as they say, if you don’t use it, you lose it. Become conscious of how many hours you sit, and spend more time being active. Join a gym and work out, get outdoors and hike, play sport. Do whatever feels right for you. Not only will it help you to maintain your body shape, but it also gives you a sharper mind and give you a way to socialise with others.
  3. Keep away from sugar and processed foods. It’s so easy to overindulge during stressful moments. We seem to have more as our age increases with new responsibilities. It’s easy to get that quick fix of sugar, and then it all comes crashing down. Do try to limit these in your diet, as they will make you feel run down and rushing…
