You Maybe Ageing Your Brain by Doing This One Thing Daily
It seems as though the right amount of alcohol consumption misled the general public — according to this study.
Various recommendations are given for both men and women, stating that a glass or two of wine is beneficial for your health.
According to this study, it’s ageing your brain!
Light to moderate drinking is associated with harming your brain.
Researchers analysed data from more than 36 000 adults and found a link between drinking and reduced brain volume.
Reduced volume results in one alcoholic unit per day — the equivalent to half a beer!
Unfortunately, the more you drink, the more apparent the significant reduction will become.
For example, in 50-year-olds, the average drinking increases from one alcoholic unit a day to two were associated with changes in the brain, equivalent to ageing two years!
Three units of alcohol were linked to three and a half years.
The team reported these findings in the Journal of Nature Communications.
Large scale sample sizes allow researchers to find patterns between drinking the equivalent of half a beer and one beer a day.
Unfortunately, these findings contrast with Government guidelines on safe drinking limits.
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism recommends women consume an average of no more than one drink per day.
Men’s limitations were twice that volume!
An excess amount is associated with decreased brain volume.
Strong evidence exists confirming that heavy drinking causes changes in brain structure, including a reduction in grey and white matter across the brain.
